Construction-Related Parking Disruption

To the UHD Community:

Starting in early April, Vaughn Construction, the general contractor for the Welcome Center/Garage project, will need to do work on Level 1 of the Academic Building Garage. The work involves utility tie-ins for the new building and will necessarily be disruptive to operations.

Full Closure of the Academic Building Garage

Due to the nature of the work to be performed, Vaughn requires blocks of time when the garage can be completely shut down. With the exception of Thursday, May 15, all of the full closure days fall on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. The impacted dates are listed below:

  • Saturday, 4/19
  • Friday - Sunday, 4/25 - 4/27
  • Friday - Sunday, 5/2 - 5/4
  • Friday and Saturday, 5/9 - 5/10
  • Thursday - Sunday, 5/15 - 5/18
  • Friday and Saturday, 5/23 - 5/24

Access cards for those with reserved Academic Building Garage parking will be programmed to access the Vine Street Garage (the student garage located east of the Shea Street Building) during these closure dates. Replacement lots A & B are also options.

Single Lane for Entry/Exit - Academic Building Garage

The work being performed Monday-Thursday during this six-week period will require that entry and exit to/from the Academic Building Garage be reduced to a single lane. This will be the condition beginning Monday, April 14, 2014. During this period Vaughn will have flagmen in place from 6am to 8pm to assist with the traffic control. After 8 pm, UHD police will take over traffic control. All are urged to be extra observant and aware while entering and exiting the Academic Building Garage during this period.

During this six week period, the reserved levels of the Academic Building Garage (Levels P2 and P3) will be accessible only to reserved parking permit holders (Permits showing RES140XX). With external personnel now involved (flagmen) no special arrangements can be accommodated. Levels P2 and P3 will continue to be available to full-time and part-time faculty after 5 pm on an as-available basis.

On the Mondays-through-Thursdays of this six-week period, from 7am to 8pm, there will be a UHD parking attendant on duty in the Academic Building Garage, mainly to assist visitors and disabled. If planning an event that falls during this period that is going to involve more than 10 visitors, please contact the Parking & Transportation Office. Visitor parking for large events will likely be in the Vine Street Garage, though this is not a hard-and-fast rule. We will look at each event and do what makes the most sense.

As a reminder, the access cards issued to those designated as disabled are programmed to also access the Naylor Street Garage (under the Shea Street Building). On Fridays there will be a parking attendant available to shuttle disabled parkers from the Naylor/Vine Garages to the North Dock Lobby of the One Main Building. This service will be available from 7:30-9 am and from 4-5:30 pm. Those needing assistance between 9am and 4pm on Fridays should contact the Parking Office at ext. 8127. Disabled parking is also available in the Daly Street Student Parking Lot near the 2nd gazebo, where the shuttle bus picks up and drops off.

Upon completion of this work we will return to the normal two-lane configuration for the Academic Building Garage. This should be the case beginning Tuesday, May 27, as we return from the extended Memorial Day weekend.

While these coming temporary changes are something all should be aware of, those who will be most directly impacted are (1) disabled parkers, (2) visitors, and (3) those with reserved parking spaces on P2 and P3 of the Academic Building Garage.

I want to stress here that the Academic Building Garage will remain in-service during Monday through Thursday throughout this time, with the exception of Thursday, May 15. The full closures are limited to Fridays and weekends, when demand is much lighter.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we get this important project underway.
