University of Houston-Downtown's Office of Technology Services continues to provide computers, webcams and Internet access resources to students in need.

According to Said Fattouh, UHD Executive Director of Information Technology and Deputy Chief Information Officer, more than 447 students have been provided with 502 devices for their learning needs.

“The service we are providing to students has been well received, and is extremely rewarding to us in IT, knowing that we are able to assist students with remote learning who are in need of technology during these unprecedented times,” Fattouh said.

Students requesting technology must fill out the Technology Needs Survey, which will be reviewed by the Office of the Dean of Students and forwarded to Information Technology (IT) for verification.

Eligible students must meet the following criteria:

• Currently enrolled for Fall Semester
• Have a need for PC, internet or webcam
• Could not have been an issued a PC during the spring semester unless the PC was not operable

Those approved will be contacted and may pick up their equipment from the IT Surplus Store, Room S819.

The computer distributions were first offered in March when the COVID-19 pandemic and Harris County’s Stay at Home orders left students to finish the semester through virtual instruction. Information Technology then initiated the program to provide students with used/retired computers that are in good working condition. At that time, Said noted that 335 students were provided with nearly 400 devices.

Said wants students to also be aware of the resources available through IT, including its Taking Classes Online and Remotely website. In addition, the IT Service Desk remains open 7 a.m. to midnight seven days a week.
