CCESL Launches 'Cultural Explorations' Series
The Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (CCESL) recently launched a new annual signature event, "Cultural Explorations," to provide the UHD community with an opportunity to learn about different cultures in the Greater Houston area.
The inaugural event took place November 15 and showcased the Islamic culture through dance, prayer, food, a speakers' panel, and an art exhibition. More than 100 people attended the event, including students, faculty, staff, and community members.
The nearby Islamic Da'wah Center of Houston provided the art, tapestry, books, ceramics, and clothes for the exhibit. Ameer Abuhalimeh, director of the Da'wah Center, and Mark Cervenka, associate professor and director for the O'Kane Gallery were instrumental in coordinating the exhibit. Other event participants included Shawn Hyder, preparator of the O'Kane Gallery and student volunteers from the CCESL, Honors Program, and the Community Engagement Program. Surveys conducted at the end of the event reflected overwhelming satisfaction with the event and a desire for future "Cultural Explorations."
