'BOUNCE' Summer Program to Encourage Healthy Eating

BOUNCEUniversity of Houston-Downtown (UHD) is looking for Hispanic and African American girls, and their parental guardians, to participate in the BOUNCE Summer and BOUNCE Plus summer camp programs.

BOUNCE, an acronym for Behavior Opportunities Uniting Nutrition Counseling and Exercise, programs are for girls interested in being active and learning healthy eating practices. Participants learn how to make healthy food choices, be active in fun ways and develop positive self-esteem and body images.

The BOUNCE Summer program runs Monday, July 11 through Friday, Aug. 5, and will take place at the Jesse H. Jones Student Life Center, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will enjoy breakfast, lunch and two healthy snacks daily.

The BOUNCE Plus program will be held July 15, 22 and 29, and Aug. 5, from 1-3 p.m. at University of Houston-Main. A least one parent must attend; siblings are welcome to participate in all Bounce Plus sessions as well.

Participant requirements:

  • Must be Hispanic or African-American
  • Must be between the ages of nine and 14
  • Must be overweight
  • Must complete physical and psychological examinations including surveys and measurement sessions
