Battle of the Bands: Mariachi Los Caimanes vs. Rice! And the Winner Is ...

It was the final game of the Houston Dynamo season – Dynamo vs. the LA Galaxy. The sold-out stadium was full of energy and anticipation when two bands took the field in a head-to-head contest to determine the best college mariachi band in the city: UHD’s Mariachi Los Caimanes versus Rice’s Mariachi Luna Llena (full moon, alluding to Rice’s mascot, the Owls).

José Vazquez, Associate Director of Student Activities and Director of Mariachi Los Caimanes, arranged for each band to perform a 10-minute pre-game show in this inaugural Battle of Mariachis at PNC Stadium.

And the winner is … Mariachi Los Caimanes! “The audience selected the winner,” said Vazquez. “The winning band got an opportunity to sing the National Anthem before the game and perform a song at halftime.”

Congratulations, Mariachi Los Caimanes! The win, which comes as no surprise to the Gator community, adds to Mariachi Los Caimanes’ growing reputation as an outstanding mariachi band. To learn more, visit the Mariachi Los Caimanes web page
