Austin Turns Gator Blue During UHD Day at Texas Capitol
By Mike Emery
More than 120 University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) faculty, staff, students and alumni ventured to Austin to advocate for their institution on Feb. 21. UHD Day at the Texas Capitol offered members of the Gator family an opportunity to engage with legislators at the Texas State Capitol and discuss items on the University's legislative agenda.
Two buses departed from UHD to Austin, where University advocates were recognized on the floors of both the House of Representatives and Senate chambers. UHD constituents later assembled in groups to visit legislators in their offices and offer insights on the institution and its goals during the 85th Legislature.
Among those in attendance were UHD Interim President Michael A. Olivas, University of Houston System (UHS) Regent Paula Mendoza, UHS Student Regent Joshua Freed, UHD Interim Senior Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs and Provost Ed Huguetz, UHD Alumni Association Chair Phillip Ellison and Student Government Association President Mustapha Nyalla. Legislators who met with UHD delegates included Representatives (and alums) Mary Ann Perez and Briscoe Cain, Sen. Borris Miles and Rep. Jarvis Johnson.
