A Celebration of Susan Ahern Scheduled for Nov. 1

Save the date for a celebration of Susan Ahern, who served as Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences for many years. The event is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Willow St. Pump Station, 811 N. San Jacinto Street.

The evening will commence at 6 p.m. with mingling and a wine bar, a buffet dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and a program is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Tickets are $20, available by advance purchase only. Cash or checks, made out to the University of Houston-Downtown, can be sent or delivered to Tiziano Hernandez (hernandez1@uhd.edu), College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Suite 1015-S, One Main St.

Dr. Ahern came to UHD in 1983 to teach English. As an associate professor, she received the Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence. Later, she served as Department Chair before becoming Dean in 2003. As Chair and Dean, she oversaw the development and approval of UHD's degrees in Philosophy, English, Spanish, Fine Arts, Social Work and the Professional Writing and Technical Communication masters programs. She also oversaw the creation of a number of minors, including Creative Writing, Ethnic Studies, Film Studies, Gender Studies and Religious Studies.
