40,000 Windows Cafe Opens in the Library

By: Mary Ann Cozza

The UHD community now has another option for snacks, beverages and feeding caffeine addictions. 40,000 Windows Cafe (named for the number of windows in the original One Main Building) officially opened this January to serve students, faculty and staff on the first day of the Spring 2013 semester.

The Cafe is located in the southeast corner of the W.I. Dykes Library on the fifth floor. Menu items include hot and cold coffee beverages made to order, smoothies, a selection of bottled drinks, pastries, salads and other light snacks. Cafe hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

"The Library staff is very excited to have this cafe, which offers great beverages and light food, since it will provide a more welcoming atmosphere for students and faculty in visiting the Library. We hope the Library will be the place to go to study and do research in comfort," said Pat Ensor, Executive Director of Library Services.

A soft opening was held Friday, Jan. 11, for the workers to put their training to use and allow UHD employees to get their first glimpse of the recently completed construction.

Director of University Business Services Mary Torres said that the design and name of the Cafe were intended to emphasize the awesome view UHD has of downtown Houston and the bayou.

Michelle Falcon, associate director of learning success, said, "I'm sure lots of students will be coming to this cafe. It's so nice!"

While some of the furniture has yet to be delivered, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to stop by the Cafe for a drink and snack and enjoy the ambiance!
