President's Message: Hurricane Preparations

Dear University Community,

The Houston area and members of our UHD family are all too familiar with the devastating effects of hurricanes and severe storms. And with hurricane season starting this week, it’s imperative to have a preparedness plan in place.

Hurricane season begins on June 1 and extends to Nov. 30. As evidenced by storms such as Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and recent rain events, major weather systems can be very unpredictable. That is why it is critical to be prepared for severe weather emergencies.

It is important to equip your homes and families with a hurricane kit. It is also imperative that students, faculty and staff update their contact information to receive emergency alerts (through email and text). Also, UHD community members are encouraged to utilize UHD’s other communication channels (social media, UHD News) to receive timely emergency notifications. Sign up for alerts at our Emergency Management site and bookmark other sites that will be useful in the event of a crisis.

These would include:

Through these channels, the University can communicate important messages during emergencies.

In addition to staying connected with UHD communications, you also are encouraged to stay informed through the Regional Joint Information Center, which provides updated reports during episodes of severe weather.

My hope is for an “uneventful” hurricane season. However, if the unexpected should occur, I believe our city and our Gator family will be prepared and ready.

Sincerely,

Dr. Juan Sánchez Muñoz
UHD President
