UHD to Help With "Walk to End Bladder Cancer"

An estimated two-thirds of all cancers are preventable. While early detection increases the number of treatment options, information and education are key to cancer prevention. This Sunday, May 6, the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) will host "The Best Little Walk in Texas" at Terry Hershey Park at 15200 Memorial Dr. in Houston. The UHD's Dr. Heather Goltz, assistant professor of social work, and student organizations Social Work Student and Community Advocacy Network (SWSCAN) and Cosplay for Kids will be volunteering at the event. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. followed by a Zumba warm-up at 9:15 a.m. The two-mile walk will commence at 9:30 a.m.

What began in 2011 as a national Walk for Bladder Cancer has expanded to more than 25 locations across the county. It engages close to 3,000 participants annually, and has raised more than $3 million toward bladder cancer education, awareness and research. This year will be BCAN's 8th walk season. Goltz, who has worked with BCAN in the past on other initiatives, invites the UHD community to participate and enjoy good eats, drinks, Zumba, a DJ and photographer, while raising awareness about bladder cancer. It will be fun for the whole family and pets are welcome.

In addition to her work with BCAN, Goltz has also been named the 2018 Jimmy D. Long, Sr., Louisiana Scholars' College Distinguished Alumni. Her Alma Mater's selection committee voted unanimously in support of her being named the award recipient due to the breadth of her teaching; depth of service; and the sheer weight of her research and publications.
