UH System Hosts Public Art Tours Featuring UHD

“Salt Marsh” by John Biggers

Public Art at the University of Houston System (UHS) is hosting tours of the UH System Public Art Collection the first Friday of each month throughout the 2017-2018 academic year.

This April and May, UHS is hosting two tours, at UHD, led by renowned artist and professor of art history, Floyd Newsum, and Dr. Susan Baker, professor of art history and curator of the O’Kane Gallery. Newsum’s tour will focus on art in the One Main & Academic Building, and Welcome Center, while Baker’s tour will feature art in the Shea Street Building and Commerce Street Building.

In recent years, a push has been made to make the UH System Public Art Collection more visible, including a branding and marketing campaign, new website, and these public tours.

The UH System has acquired an extensive art collection through Texas’ Percent-for-Art Program, whereby any new construction or renovation requires that 1 percent of the budget be reserved for art. The University of Houston was the first public university to enact the policy in 1966 and the policy has expanded as the UH System has grown. Over the past 50-plus years, the UH System has collected more than 500 works of art. UHD’s public art collection features more than 50 unique pieces of art found through hallways, meeting rooms and public spaces throughout the University.

“The UH System, including UHD, has one of the most significant public collections of art on university campuses in the U.S., and it’s free and open to the public,” said Baker. “The pieces that are in the collection tell the story of our campuses, reflecting our diversity, our environments, resources, and values. The public tours seek to familiarize the community with the collection, but also with UHD.  We see it as a way of promoting the school’s strengths and the beauty of our campus. Visitors learn about leading contemporary artists and experience the complexities of their artwork.”
