IRM Center Receives Gift to Support Student Success, Program Growth

Summary

By Mike Emery

The University of Houston-Downtown's Insurance and Risk Management (IRM) Center was recently awarded a gift of $5,000 from the Houston Chapter of the Risk Management Society (RIMS).

"The UHD Insurance and Risk Management Center is extremely grateful to RIMS for their support of the program and their donation, which will allow us to offer scholarships and help the program continue to grow" said Priscilla Oehlert, director of the IRM Center. "The Houston RIMS Chapter provides the students with a venue to meet industry professionals, build relationships and often find employment opportunities."

Based in UHD's Marilyn Davies College of Business, the IRM Center offers students a Bachelor of Business Administration in Insurance and Risk Management. Students can also apply coursework toward professional designations and participate in internships that offer real-world experience.

The IRM curriculum includes courses, such as "Value Analysis in Insurance and Risk Management," "Risk Management Theory & Practice," and "Legal and Political Aspects of Insurance and Risk Management." More details about the IRM Center and the bachelor's degree program are available here.

"Risk management and Insurance is an ever-evolving field and requires an evolving workforce," said Roy Hock, president of RIMS Houston. "Our goal at RIMS Houston is to support both the education and experience needed to supply the current and future demand of our ever-growing industry. By partnering with institutions, like the University of Houston-Downtown, we can best serve and promote this goal. UHD provides a unique experience for its students by combining education and community involvement in a risk-centric degree, which we are excited to support and look forward to growing this relationship in the future."
