Freshman Common Reader/Convocation Slated for Sept. 15

Summary

By Sheryl E. Taylor

UHD's University College offers freshmen an opportunity to begin their college journeys with a common foundation. It begins on Friday, Sept. 15 with the College's Freshman Common Reader and Convocation event in Robertson Auditorium and Academic Building A300.

The Common Reader program kicks-off each summer with a contest (written or graphic submissions) on a specific book. This year's Common Reader is Jennifer Teege and Nikola Sellmair's book, "My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me: A Black Woman Discovers Her Family's Nazi Past." Teege is the event's keynote speaker.

Over the last decade, colleges and universities across the nation have adopted Common Reader programs for incoming freshman, and UHD has been an enthusiastic participant in this trend. The Common Reader offers a tremendous opportunity for our incoming Gators to begin this new chapter of their academic and intellectual lives during summer orientation. In combination with the University's Gator Gateway orientation program, incoming freshmen gain valuable experience and guided practice in exercising the habits of mind and intellectual analysis and discourse which will be essential to their academic success beginning on day one of fall semester. The Common Reader is intended to develop a shared sense of academic community for freshmen that will continue through their first year at UHD, resulting in higher levels of student success and retention.

The program culminates with a Convocation, which celebrates and honors the entering freshman class:
