Three University of Houston-Downtown undergraduates and Nuclear Regulatory Commission scholarship recipients—Aaron Torres, Kendall Friess, and Charles Punnathara—participated in a summer research opportunity in Sweden.
The trip provided cultural enrichment and hands-on learning to the students. Torres and Friess recounted their personal experience.
“Working with students from around the world has enhanced my perspective,” said Torres. “I also learned the Swedish cultures and their major concerns about the environment.”
Friess said, “My experience in Sweden has taught me new perspectives and opened my eyes to new concepts and solutions for dealing with nuclear waste in a feasible manner. Being thrust into a culture different from my own was one of the greatest experiences of my life.”
The research opportunity was hosted by the KTH Swedish Institute of Technology. Students were accompanied by Dr. Janusz Grebowicz, professor in the UHD Natural Sciences Department. The trip was supported by the UHD Study Abroad Office and the UHD Scholars Academy.
