Criminal Justice Students Tour the Houston Emergency Center

UHD criminal justice students participated in a tour at the Houston Emergency Center.

On April 28, University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) 12 Gators attended a tour of the Houston Emergency Center (HEC).  HEC is a 911 emergency communication center consisting of Neutral Public Safety Answering Point, Police Department Emergency Communications Division, Fire Department Emergency Communications Operations, and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM).

UHD adjunct professor Nhatthien “Nathan” Nguyen, who also is a Lieutenant with Houston Police Department (HPD), sponsored the tour as part of his Organized Crimes criminal justice class.

J. Broussard, Emergency Communication Division Officer at HPD,  gave a brief history of HEC and its training/safety protocol, operational procedures. Personnel from the Greater Harris County 9-1-1 Emergency Network and the Houston Fire Department also showed the students how calls are received and dispatched.

Office of Emergency Management’s Director Rick Flanagan provided OEM’s history and its operation.

Nguyen said the students were very impressed with the overall operation of HEC, and also expressed  interest in careers at the center.
