Women’s Volleyball Club Team

The University of Houston (UHD) women’s volleyball club team recently defeated Lone Star College-North Harris on Saturday, April 1 to claim their sixth Houston Club Sports Conference title overall and their first since spring 2015. The Gators finished the regular season undefeated at 5-0, which was good enough for the top seed in the conference tournament.

UHD found themselves unexpectedly in an early hole versus the fourth seed in Lone Star College-Cy Fair. In a best of three match, the Gators were able to pull even at 1-1 heading into a match deciding third set. After a close call, UHD was able to pull through in the third set and start the round robin championship tournament with a win.

After sweeping Lone Star College-Tomball in the second match for UHD, the final test was a victory over Lone Star College-North Harris to secure the team’s sixth conference championship. Similar to the first match versus Cy Fair, the Gators were in an early hole after losing the first set 25-22 to North Harris.

The team regrouped in the second set and defeated the Hurricanes by a score of 25-10 to force a third set. With a conference championship on the line, the Gators won the third and final set of the day to secure head coach Alicia Nava’s third conference championship at UHD.

Congratulations to Gator Hatziri Rancano on earning HCSC all-tournament first team, and Raven Robertson on earning HCSC all-tournament first team and tournament Most Valuable Player. Hatziri is a veteran member of the team who was part of the club’s last championship in 2015. Raven is only a freshman at UHD in her first year on the team and has a bright future ahead of her.

Women’s Basketball Club Team

The UHD women’s basketball club team finished the regular season in the Houston Club Sports Basketball Conference with a record of five wins and one loss, which results in the number two seed in the upcoming conference tournament on April 9.

For its first competitive season since the fall of 2014, the women’s basketball team is almost to the finish line this year with a conference championship in sight. Head coach Eric Taylor has put together a great season so far and will have his team ready to go on Sunday.

UHD will be the number two seed on Sunday and take on the number three seed in Texas Southern University. This is a rematch from the season open in which the Gators defeated the Tigers in a close contest 40-39 on February 10.

The game times and schedule for the championship tournament on April 9, is still to be determined, but will be posted on the Sports & Fitness website once announced this week.

UHD Gatorettes

The UHD Gatorettes dance club team finished in the top five of the University II Division at the 2017 American Dance/Drill Collegiate Nationals at the University of North Texas.

This was only the second time in program history that the UHD Gatorettes competed at Collegiate Nationals. In front of thousands of fans at the University of North Texas, the Gatorettes delivered an energetic performance and asserted itself as a competitive collegiate dance squad.

Head coach Yoanna Isas had her team ready to perform, and is already looking forward to 2017-18. The Gatorettes aim to make annual visits to Collegiate Nationals to test their talents against the top competitive collegiate dance squads at the national level.
