Campus and Community

Campus Creativity on Display

Don’t let the new name fool you. This year’s University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) Arts and Communication Festival (formerly the Fine Arts Festival) will continue the tradition of engaging Gators in creative campus activities.

The Arts and Communication Festival runs March 27 through 31 with events designed to showcase the talents of faculty, staff and students. The campus community will experience art, music, theater and more throughout the week. Likewise, students will have opportunities to network with local communications and creative professionals during an internship fair.

The festival offers Gators several opportunities to take a break from work or studying and mentally recharge by attending the festival’s free events.

“It’s a nice opportunity to do something fun and creative,” said Abigail Koenig, communications lecturer and chair of this year’s festival. “The Arts and Communication Festival also allows everyone opportunities to tap into their creative sides.”

The festival also serves to spotlight UHD’s arts venues such as the O’Kane Gallery and O’Kane Theatre – both of which are hosting events this week. It also introduces audiences to artists on the rise including student Bobby Ramos, who will create a giant gator chalk illustration on March 28 at the South Deck.

“The Arts and Communication will have a little bit of everything,” Koenig said. “In planning this year’s event, we included student input and partnered with the Student Government Association and Asian Student Association. It’s not just for students though. This is an event for the entire community.”

Festival attendees can share their experiences through social media using the hashtag #UHDartscomm. The festival’s schedule is as follows:
