UHD History Students Campout in the Piney Woods of Texas

Summary

By Toni Carter

The Garna Christian chapter of the Walter P. Webb Historical Society and the Historical Honor Society of Phi Alpha Theta of the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) joined together for the second annual Spring Break camping trip. This year, it was to Martin Dies, Jr. State Park, which is located on the banks of the Steinhagen Reservoir in Jasper and Tyler counties in Texas.

Accompanied by history faculty Jose E. Alvarez and Nancy Lopez, the students spent three days and two nights enjoying the great outdoors. Part of the trip was historical in nature with the presenting of papers related to local topics and events, as well as visiting the county's courthouse, war memorial, and the downtown area.

The trip also included hiking in the woods, canoeing/kayaking in the park's reservoir, cooking dinner on the campfire grill, campfire popcorn and s'mores. The night concluded sleeping under the stars in camping tents.
