UHD Wrestlers Qualify for NCWA Nationals

The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) wrestling club competed over the weekend at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Southwest Conference Championships. The top college wrestling club programs and top wrestlers from the Southwest Conference competed with a berth to the NCWA National Championships on the line.

Gator Kavrin Cox qualified for NCWA Nationals for the second straight season. Kavrin finished in second place in his 285 pound weight class. For the first time in program history, UHD wrestling will be sending two females to NCWA Nationals. Nastasha Balkum finished as a runner up in her 116 pound weight class, and Jasmin Olvera came away with first place in her 155 pound weight class. Kevin Evans did not finish in the top two of his 133 pound weight class, but did receive an alternative invitation to NCWA Nationals.

The NCWA National Championships will take place from March 8 – March 12 in the Allen Events Center in Allen, TX.

Other Sport Clubs Come Away Victorious

The UHD women’s volleyball club team improved to 2-0 in the Houston Club Sports Conference after defeating Lone Star College-North Harris on Feb. 22. The Gators defeated the Hurricanes three sets to one: 25-19, 17-25, 25-14, 25-10. The next game is at 7 p.m., March 1, in the Student Life Center versus Lone Star College-Kingwood.

UHD women’s remains undefeated and in first place of the Houston Club Sports Basketball Conference after winning 51-41 on the road at Lone Star College-Tomball. Gabby Hernandez led the score with 16 points, while Bianca Serna contributed with 13 points, and Ese Olokpa with nine points. The Lady Gators will compete in the NIRSA Region IV Basketball Tournament this weekend March 3-5 at the University of Houston versus the top college club teams in the Southwest region.

The UHD men’s soccer club team came away with a 5-2 win on the road at Lone Star College-Montgomery over the weekend. Former game saving UHD goal keeper Fernando Zapata, now turned offensive juggernaut, led the scoring with a hat trick! Fernando knocked in three goals to help led the Gators to victory. The next game is scheduled for Saturday, March 4 versus Lone Star College-North Harris, and Sunday March 5 versus North American University. Both games will be at 9 a.m. at Bayland Park #2.
