Being healthy is crucial to a student’s success. That’s not always easy, especially during cold and flu season. At the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD), Gators have resources committed to their well-being.

UHD Student Health Services helps keep UHD students healthy and free from illness. Located in S445, One Main Building, the clinic is equipped with two examination rooms, a clinical laboratory and a patient quiet room. Nurse practitioners are available by appointment for a variety of services. These include: general physical exams, Pap smears, breast exams, STD testing and wellness exams. UHD Student Health Services also provides walk-in services for flu shots, HIV testing and pregnancy testing.

“Our mission is to provide high quality, cost-effective health care in order to promote health and support academic success to our students,” said Janet Franco, clinic coordinator of UHD Student Health Services. “Students should take advantage of these health services for many reasons. Students can receive low cost medical services with possible same day appointments. Our clinic also provides services ranging from bloodwork and consultations to treatment of acute illnesses.”

Students at UHD are provided with free basic services including first aid, blood pressure screening, a lactation room for breast pumping, free condoms and feminine pads. Low cost services include ace wraps and blood glucose testing for $5.

Health Insurance

As demands grow at campus health centers, UHD now offers student health insurance plans through Academic Blue, Blue Cross Blue Shield Texas (BCBSTX) for all domestic students who are enrolled for six or more credit hours. Insurance also is available for graduate students enrolled in three credit hours and students taking three credit hours during a summer session. If you’re an international or ELI student, health insurance is included in your tuition.

“We wanted to provide an option to uninsured students,” said Franco. “There are many advantages available for students when they sign up for Academic Blue, and many benefits and options at an affordable price. By purchasing health insurance, students are investing not only in their health but they are ensuring their success academically at UHD. The deductible for the plan is very low—$350 annually—when compared to other insurance plans with deductibles as high as $5,000 annually.”

“With Academic Blue, BCBSTX, students can select a provider of their choice. If students choose to be seen at the clinic on campus, the copay is $0. Ultimately, we hope this eliminates the challenges some uninsured students face, she said.”

UHD Student Health Services only accepts UHD Student Health Insurance Plans. Students who do not have UHD Health insurance will have a bill charged to their student accounts. A fee is required for clinician visits and laboratory testing.

UHD faculty and staff are eligible for services but must pay for services rendered. Private insurance is not accepted.

Student Counseling Services

Located in the same suite is UHD Student Counseling Services. Counselors are available to assist students with issues that may impact their wellbeing. Students can visit with counselors for everyday concerns and other problems. Counselors can address issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship and parenting issues, study tips, grief/loss and adjusting to college life. More information on counseling services is available here.
