Most of us don't think too much about mailroom processes such as collecting, culling and postmarking, scanning, sorting, transporting, delivery. Honestly, it's a lot of work. When your mailroom runs smoothly, you don't have to think about it. It just gets done.

Luckily, University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) has a mailroom that runs like a well-oiled machine thanks to Debora Evans, manager of Shipping, Receiving and Mailroom.

Evans was recently awarded Houston Postal Customer Council (HPCC) Mail Manager of the Year 2016 for demonstrating knowledge and support of the advancement of the United States Postal Service (USPS) mailing industry.

Evans' animated personality and passionate spirit are infectious, so when she spoke of receiving this award, she was positively beaming.

"I have so much pride in what I do," said Evans. "I love my job. I love helping people; and I give 100 percent in every task that is put before me."

The HPCC is an organization that provides information on cost-effective and profitable mailing, education and training, and solving local challenges in the industry.

"Debora Evans stood out because of seminars she provided for the major campus mailers that brought USPS Inspection Service, USPS Business Network Specialists, and industry reps to discuss safety, best mailing practices, and cost-savings," said Kathy Hall, executive board member of HPCC and business development manager of the Business Extension Bureau (BEB).

Evans graduated from UHD in 2006 where she majored in Interdisciplinary Studies and minored in Sociology. She has been a UHD staff member for 10 years. Recently, she served as 2016 Staff Council President and was also a member of the search committee for the new UHD President and Chief of Police.

Evans is a member of the National Association of College and University Mail Services (NACUMS), Southwest Association of College and University Mail Services (SWACUMS), Houston Postal Customer Council (HOUSTONPPC), and the Mail Systems Management Association (MSMA).

"Being involved is my passion," said Evans.

Presently, Evans is working to create more of a web presence for the UHD Mail Room.

"Debora is so deserving of this award," said Mary Torres, director, University Business Services, UHD. "Her peers in the mail and postal services industry respect her passion in always seeking cost-effective ways of advancing the mail processes for the UHD community and the entire industry."
