Thousands of family, friends, and loved ones attended commencement ceremonies for the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) on Dec. 17 and 18.
UHD graduated more than 1,300 students at its 61st commencement ceremony at Minute Maid Park on Saturday. Speakers at the event included UHD Interim President Michael A. Olivas; Texas Sen. Rodney Ellis; University of Houston System Regent Paula Mendoza; and student speaker Naiyolis Palomo Garcia, who earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from the College of Public Service.
“Like many of you, I’m the first in my family to obtain a college degree,” said Palomo Garcia. “Gators, whatever career you’ve chosen, remember that we’re all human beings with a purpose in life, and we all want to be treated with the same dignity and respect. The change starts within us.”
On Sunday, UHD’s College of Business (COB) celebrated more than 200 graduates, who earned Master of Business Administration and Master of Security Management degrees, at the Bayou City Event Center. The event featured remarks from business leader and UHD Corporate Fellow Susan Hodge who told the COB grads that “you’re not ordinary students; you’re students with a dream.”
Olivas expressed to the new grads that UHD is “no longer Houston’s best kept secret” and congratulated ALL for finishing “UHD Strong.”
