A Note from UHD Interim President Michael A. Olivas: Welcome Dr. Juan Sánchez Muñoz

Dear UHD Family,

Juan Sanchez Muñoz, sole finalist for the position of UHD president

Dr. Juan Sánchez Muñoz, sole finalist for the position of UHD president

Many of you are already aware that Dr. Juan Sánchez Muñoz has emerged as the sole finalist for the position of president of the University of Houston-Downtown. I am pleased that he will step into this role. Muñoz is energetic, passionate and very knowledgeable about higher education. I know he will be an outstanding leader and help UHD reach new heights.

Selecting a new university leader is no easy task … and identifying UHD’s new president was no

exception. All of the candidates were outstanding higher education administrators. With that in mind, the UHD community should know that they are getting a president who is not only accomplished but one who truly understands the mission of this institution.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with him during his campus visit and hope to connect with him soon to assist with his transition into the president’s office.

Dr. Muñoz is committed to student success and retention. He also wants to continue burnishing the reputation of our institution. I told him we’re no longer the best kept secret in Houston, but he already knew that. He arrived to campus well-informed about UHD, its community and its mission.

We’re definitely in good hands. He’s arriving to UHD from a top institution – Texas Tech University – and will bring some new perspectives to campus.

Thanks to everyone who served on the search committee and to those who participated in the campus forums and visits. Finding our next president was indeed a community effort, and our hard work paid off.

I also ask you to pitch in and extend him the same generous assistance you have given me every day.

Join me in welcoming Dr. Muñoz as UHD’s sixth president and making him feel at home.

Michael
