UHD Hosts HDEART Consortium Workshop

On June 20-25, University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) hosted the HDEART Consortium 14th Annual Disparities on Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice summer workshop in the Wilhelmina Cullen Robertson Auditorium.

Keynote speakers included Maureen Y. Lichtveld, M.D., M.P.H., president, Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools, and professor and department chair of Global Environmental Health Sciences, Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and Camara Jones, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., president of the American Public Health Association and research director on social determinants of health and equity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Welcome and opening speakers included Lovell A. Jones, chair and founder, HDEART Consortium; co-chair Heather Goltz, Ph.D., LMSW, M.Ed., assistant professor of social work at UHD; Leigh Van Horn, Ed.D., interim dean of the College of Public Service at UHD; Margaret P. Moss, Ph.D., JD, RN, FAAN, associate professor and assistant dean of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Buffalo School of Nursing; and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (18th Congressional District).

Distinguished speakers discussed their lives, careers and accomplishments, and shared unique experiences and perspectives on topics from health inequality, to healthcare through Affordable Care Act (ACA), to the impact and funding of health disparities in a minority and medically underserved population.

The audience composed of physicians, nurses, other healthcare professionals, social workers, healthcare advocates, civic and governmental leaders, and members of the University community.

The event was open to the public and was co-sponsored by UHD and the Texas A&M University Health Science Center.
