More than 1,000 graduation candidates for May 2016 commencement attended the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) Cap and Gown Reception Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7. The first reception honored graduates from the College of Sciences and Technology, University College and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The second reception celebrated students from the College of Public Service and the College of Business.

The occasion kicked off with a welcome reception in One Main Building. Grad candidates mingled with classmates, family and current alumni while enjoying complimentary refreshments. Welcoming remarks were delivered by UHD Vice President of Advancement and University Relations Johanna Wolfe, and UHD Interim President Michael A. Olivas.

UHD alumna Deltra Hayes (‘00), followed with the keynote address in Robertson Auditorium. Hayes, a vice president of strategic relationship management at Voya Financial, and UHD alumni council member, expressed her determination to pursue her educational goals and shared her academic journey as an adult student, wife and mother of two. She also stressed the importance of volunteering and giving back to the University community saying, “We have two hands: one is for ourselves and one is to give to others.”

During the event, students received commencement details, were inducted as alumni and learned about becoming involved former students. The event concluded with students picking up their cap and gowns.

“I felt like a child on Christmas morning opening presents,” said UHD communication studies student Drew Campbell — who was very excited to finally receive his cap and gown. He added, “Graduating from a prestigious institution like UHD is a huge accomplishment.”
