Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society Inducts New Members

Approximately 100 students, faculty and staff attended the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) chapter of the Scholastic Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi (PΚP) ceremony to honor and recognize 61 new inductees. PKP is the oldest and most selective collegiate honor society, recognizing excellence across all academic disciplines.

Chapter President José Alvarez served as master of ceremonies. Alvarez was honored and enthusiastically welcomed the new members.

"It was a unique opportunity to recognize and celebrate the outstanding academic achievements of our finest students," said Alvarez, associate professor of history and president of the UHD PKP chapter. "Surrounded by proud family members and friends, each inductee was individually recognized, presented with their PKP certificate and membership pin, and welcomed into the community of scholars."

Alvarez added, "It was also a great thrill to join my fellow professors in recognizing and acknowledging the years of hard work, study and sacrifice by our students. They represent the best and brightest and we are tremendously proud of them. "

For UHD student Sadie Salazar, being inducted into Phi Kappa Phi was not only a privilege, but a tremendous honor.

"The honor society made it clear that they value academic excellence and leadership and I am honored," said Salazar. "The ceremony itself was very nice and I was glad that my family was able to come and celebrate my initiation. Overall, my induction is a huge opportunity for me. I'm happy that I'm in an honor society that values academia and celebrates the achievements of my peers."

The event was held in the White Oak Bayou Room. UHD Interim President Michael A. Olivas gave the opening address and Mari Nicholson-Preuss, director of the UHD University Honors Programs, served as keynote speaker.

Following the presentation of certificates and membership pins, students and guests enjoyed cake and refreshments provided by Sweetness by Scharlett, a bakery owned by PKP member and entrepreneur Tatiana Gallegos.
