UHD Hosts Critical Thinking Workshop

On Friday, March 11, the QEP Committee held the first critical thinking workshop for instructors. The workshop was led by Dr. Troy Voelker, an associate professor at UH-Clearlake and a local expert on infusing critical thinking in the classroom. Dr. Lea Campbell, director of Academic Assessment, informed the group about assessment rubrics for the assignments in the A+CE courses.

Afterwards, attendees worked in small groups to design signature assignments for A+CE courses that will begin in fall 2016. Approximately 40 faculty members attended the workshop. Michael A. Olivas, interim president of UHD, welcomed the group. Other attendees included Provost Ed Hugetz, Dr. Faiza Khoja, associate vice president of the Office of Academic Affairs; Dr. Poonam Gulati Salhotra, interim director of the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning; and Dr. Gregory Dement and Mr. George Detiveaux, director and assistant director of the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence.

This event was made possible through a collaboration between the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, and the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence.

In addition, a two-day faculty workshop featuring Dr. Gerald Nosich, from the Foundation for Critical Thinking, will take place on Thursday, April 21 and Friday, April 22, from 1-4 p.m. Dr. Nosich will hold three separate hands-on workshops for faculty (organized by discipline-related groups) as they develop activities and assessments that address critical thinking. Be sure to mark your calendars. Your participation in encouraged.
