UHD Revamps Enterprise Information Systems Degree Program

In order to meet the needs of UHD students and to better reflect the focus of the program, the Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) discipline has been revamped and renamed to the Management Information Systems (MIS). Accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the MIS name accompanies an updated curriculum beginning in Fall of 2016.

The content of UHD's MIS curriculum is based on recommendations from Houston business professionals. It will prepare individuals to provide and manage information systems and related facilities for processing and retrieving internal business information; select systems and train personnel; and respond to external data requests.

The MIS degree will also include the following:

  • instruction in management control systems,
  • data storage and security,
  • business systems networking,
  • computer programming,
  • business intelligence,
  • enterprise resource planning,
  • and management information systems strategy, policy, and planning.

Dr. Utpal Bose, an associate professor in finance, accounting and EIS said, "The MIS name of the major will bring it in alignment with the commonly used name for such a major by recruiters from all industries and businesses, and therefore help our graduates to find jobs matching the skills and knowledge they acquire in our MIS major. Students minoring in MIS will benefit in their job searches as well because information technology knowledge and skill are needed in almost every professional career."

In 2015, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reported an average starting salary of $54,467 for graduates with a bachelor's degree in MIS. Moreover, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the employment for computer systems analysts, which is one popular MIS job, to grow 21 percent during the years 2014 to 2024. The average growth rate for all occupations is projected to be just 7 percent.
