UHD Celebrates the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Members of the UHD community marched in the 2016 MLK parade in Midtown Houston to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jan. 18.

Participants included, UHD NAACP, Black Student Association, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Vida Robertson, Ph.D., associate professor in English; Poonam Gulati, Ph.D., interim director of the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning; Julie Norton, executive director of Strategic Partnerships; and the UHD Cheerleaders and Gatorettes dance team — who danced and cheered, showcasing their talents in front of packed crowds.

In addition, students happily participated. They engaged the crowd by sharing an informative UHD infographic designed by the Admissions Office, and distributed information on signing up for health care insurance. BeCovered Texas provided informational bookmarkers in English and Spanish.

This community service effort was organized by the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning, the Admissions Office, the Department of Sports and Fitness, the President's Office and many faculty and staff members, to ensure a strong presence from UHD in the parade and to include a community service project as part of participation.

The group received an escort from the Gator Sports Van driven by Justin Sarabia. The students included: Amanda Alfaro, Amanda Trinity, Anastasia Balchvalova, Andrea Vargas, Ashley Lawson, Bryshanna Curtis, Carlos Amaya, Derick Small, Elizabeth Garcia, Jasmine Gunn, Jazmin Camacho, Jordan Cury, Karina Luna, Karina Ramirez, Laura Livesy, Lindsay Ware, Maria Carvajal, Nelando Gregory, Nicole Chapa, Ralph Bradley, Reginald Rivon, Sania Broom, Shelvy Cottes and Thompson Aniwi.
