CTLE Announces Online Ed Grant Recipients

Lecturer in Physics Sujata Krishna consults with CTLE Assistant Director Georges Detiveaux about online content in her course.

The Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) announces its 2015-2016 recipients for Grants for Professional Development in Online Education.

This year, 12 UHD faculty members were selected to enroll in an online teaching certification program receiving a stipend of $1000 upon completion. The grant program, in its second year of existence, covers the cost of registration and the stipend.

UHD is an institutional member of the Online Learning Consortium (OLC, formerly Sloan-C), a national organization that offers courses and workshops centered around best practices in online teaching and learning

One offering through the OLC is the Traditional Online Teaching Certification, which includes a 10-week foundation course, three electives or learning specializations that focus on improving overall competency within a specific area of academic focus, and a final capstone presentation. The Advanced Certification includes a 3-week foundation course, three 1-hour live synchronous sessions, and a final presentations week where attendees present their revised online course. This year's faculty participants include:

Traditional Certifications

•Godwin Agboka, assistant professor of English

•Stacie DeFreitas, associate professor of social sciences

•Jolanta Jaskolowska, lecturer in social sciences

•Sujata Krishna, lecturer natural sciences

•Julie Vipond Quesada, adjunct social Sciences

•Richard Simonds, adjunct in Social Work

•Yingchun Wang, assistant professor of MMBA

•Alexander Wathen, adjunct in Social Sciences

Advanced Certifications

•Susan Baker, professor of arts & humanities

•Erin Hodgess, associate professor mathematics & statistics

•Rebecca Quander, assistant professor of mathematics & statistics

•Wayne Schmadeka, adjunct in English

"I was delighted to receive the OLC Training Grant from CTLE," said Sujata Krishna. "This will enable me to receive high-quality certification in Online Education prior to going live with my first Online General Physics Course at UHD. I think it will ensure that I do not reinvent the wheel and can implement best practices when developing this course."

Susan Baker said, "By attending the OLC advanced certificate program, I hope not only to improve student engagement in my courses, but also to facilitate more dynamic group discussions and to design successful group projects. I am also interested in new technologies or technological strategies that have been proven to help students to learn more effectively."

Some of the participants will begin their coursework as early as January 2016. Faculty who participate will also share what they've learned at the CTLE's forthcoming Spring 2016 Showcase. Like all services and resources for UHD faculty, the grant program is open to tenured faculty, tenure-track faculty, non-tenure track faculty, and adjuncts alike.

"If you're a faculty member, and you're interested in getting started with professional development in online teaching, a good place to start would be to take a short-duration workshop through OLC," said Georges Detiveaux, assistant director of the CTLE. "We can help you enroll in a course such as New to Online: The Essentials, and once you complete it, you'll get a stipend of $250. This can help prepare you for a larger-scale program such as the certification courses."
