The UHD English Department invites faculty members and graduate students to attend a workshop entitled, "Online Instruction 101: Preparing Yourself and Your Students," offered by Kelli Cargile Cook, professor of technical communication and rhetoric at Texas Tech University. The event is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 28, 2015, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m, in Room N602.

Cook's research focuses on online technical communication pedagogy, program development, program assessment and professional development. She has co-edited two collections with Keith Grant-Davie: "Online Education: Global Questions, Local Answers" and "Online Education 2.0: Evolving, Adapting, and Reinventing Online Technical Communication." Cook's most recent project is "The Agile Communicator," which she co-authored with Craig Baehr. From 2012 to 2013, she was designated as a fellow by the SUNY Center for Online International Learning (COIL). Cook is a past president of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and of the Council for Programs in Technical, Scientific and Professional Communication.

Workshop participants will learn to:

• plan and teach an online course,
• design effective assignments and activities,
• engage students in online learning,
• develop appropriate assessment tools,
• use technology effectively, and
• and design for accessibility.

Participating faculty and graduate students will receive a certificate of completion, lunch and workshop materials.
