Criminal Justice Students Visit the US Coast Guard

More than 25 criminal justice students were given a tour of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Station in Galveston on Friday. Students met with Captain Brett Millican, base commander, who gave them a four-hour tour of the Base and USCG boats on site.

Students were welcomed by Captain Millican and his command staff and given a small presentation on the missions of the USCG, including drug and migrant interdiction, search and rescue, and port and waterway security. Students were able to go aboard three different USCG boats, including the USCG Manowar, and visit with seamen working on the base. The tour concluded with a presentation of weapons at the firing range and a walk through the USCG Command offices.

Professor Ashley Blackburn facilitated the tour for CJ students in consultation with Captain Millican. In addition to Dr. Blackburn, students from Alpha Phi Sigma (APS) and the Professional Society of Criminal Justice Students (PSCJS) attended as well as faculty members Janice Ahmad, Michael Cavanaugh, and Krista Gehring.
