Center for Critical Race Studies Welcomes Scholar-in-Residence Jimmy Santiago Baca
During the week of Jan. 26-31, the Center for Critical Race Studies will welcome 2015 Scholar-in-Residence Jimmy Santiago Baca. The week's events will include a writer's workshop, faculty development seminars, and a special screening of the documentary, "A Place to Stand."
Born in New Mexico, Jimmy Santiago Baca was raised first by his grandmother and later sent to an orphanage. A runaway at age 13, Baca developed a love for reading and writing during a five-year incarceration in a maximum security prison. Baca has devoted his post-prison life to writing and teaching others who are overcoming hardship. He has conducted hundreds of writing workshops in prisons, community centers, libraries and universities throughout the country.
