Powerlifting Team Shows Promise at National Championship

This weekend, the UHD powerlifting club team competed for the first time in the USA Powerlifting (USAPL) National Collegiate Championships in Orlando, Florida.

The USAPL Collegiate National meet is the most prestigious collegiate meet in the nation, as it is a three-lift competition, with lifters performing squat, bench press and deadlift for a combined total.

According to Coach John Hudson, it was a big challenge for the team stepping up to the three-lift format, with over 30 schools represented and more than 300 lifters. The Gators were in fourth place going into the third day of competition, and ended the meet in eighth place.

"I was very happy with our performance. We came away with four individual medalists, and our lifters caught the eye of some important coaches," Hudson said.

Hudson was contacted by the head coach of the Team USA squad for the North American Championships which will be held this July in St. Croix. The coach was interested in several Gators as potential Team USA members.

Among the 24 teams UHD defeated is all three service academies, Texas A&M University, University of Georgia, Boston College, VMI and University of Arkansas.
