Teacher Candidates Tour UHD's English Language Institute

Teacher candidates in Assistant Professor Colin Dalton's course, Theories and Standards of English as a Second Language (ESL) Education, recently visited the UHD English Language Institute (ELI) to learn about college-level ESL programs and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL).

Michelle Estep, ELI program coordinator and instructor, provided the future teachers with a comprehensive overview of the university's ESL program, which offers seven levels of English as a Second Language instruction to students from all over the world. The future teachers were amazed when Estep rattled off a list of over 25 countries from where her students hail. The tour concluded in the language lab, where Estep modeled computer-based supplemental English language instruction and assessments utilized by the ELI. The tour opened the students' eyes to an additional future teaching option - teaching English as a Second Language internationally.
