Powerlifting Team Wins Big at Texas A&M Meet

Ten members of the UHD powerlifting club team traveled to College Station Saturday to compete in the 2014 USAPL (USA Powerlifting) Aggie Showdown. While this was not a team competition, UHD lifters brought back plenty of medals, including seven golds and one silver.  Highlights of the meet include:

-Sophomore Tanner Surratt qualified for the USAPL National Collegiate Championship with a 1355.8 pound total in the 165-pound weight class, including his first 500 pound squat in competition.

-Senior Ilian Rojas sandwiched a 479.5 pound bench press between a 600 pound squat and his first-ever 600 pound deadlift for a personal best 1681 pound total in the 220-pound weight class.

-Junior Gustavo Samano, lifting in the 132-pound weight class, pulled a personal best 341.5 pound in the deadlift with an inspiring effort  that brought the fans to their feet. His lift took 12.88 seconds from when he began pulling the bar to when he finished the lift, an eternity for a powerlifter.

Next up for the Gators, Coach John Hudson will travel with sophomore Jordan Glenn to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the prestigious, invitational Arnold Sports Festival this weekend. Glenn is the first UHD lifter to receive an invitation to this event.

The next major team event for the Gators is the USAPL National Collegiate Championship in Orlando, Florida April 11-13.
