2014 Citizenship Month Events to Include Jazz Concert, Service Projects
November 2014 will mark the sixth annual Citizenship Month Houston, a series of city-wide events that celebrate Houston's rich cultural diversity and encourage the continued civic engagement of its residents. Dr. Noël Bezette-Flores, director of the UHD Center for Public Service and Family Strengths, serves as the co-chair for Citizenship Month.
As a partner and supporter of Citizenship Month, the University of Houston-Downtown announces these UHD hosted and sponsored events:
Oct. 23 - A Global Dialogue with United Nations' Stephane Dujarric; 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
UHD will host U.N. Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric for a dialogue on global citizenship and world affairs, especially as they relate to university students. Seating is limited. Register online to reserve space.
Oct. 23 - Student Government Association Walk 2 Vote Event; 12:45 p.m.
This march is dedicated to promoting the importance of voting and to encouraging voter participation, especially among university and college students. The Walk 2 Vote 2014 march will commence from the South Deck of the One Main Building on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m., and will feature on-site voter registration as well as keynote speakers from the Houston community.
Nov. 12 - Houston Food Bank Volunteer Opportunity; 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
An opportunity for UHD students and employees to serve the local community. Closed-toe shoes and long pants required. Register online.
Nov. 14 - An Evening of Jazz at UHD; 6-8 p.m.
Enjoy an evening of jazz through the Cultural Jazz Exchange, Sponsored by UHD and the Texas French Alliance for the Arts. Performances by the UHD Civic Jazz Orchestra featuring vocalist Julie Wilson, The Young Sounds of Houston Youth Jazz Orchestra,featured Soloist from the Paris Conservatory of Music, Emil Spanyi and jazz trumpet master, Denis Dotson. Nov. 15 - Aga Khan Partnership Walk; 10 a.m.
Join the UHD Partnership Walk team! Partnership Walk raises awareness and funds for innovative programs that create opportunity for disadvantaged communities in African and Asia.
Nov. 17 - Rails to Restaurants; 6 p.m.
Enjoy a progressive dinner at several local restaurants located along the Main Street light rail line in an event sponsored by UHD, METRORail and Houston Greeters. Party commences on the UHD South Deck.
