Environmental Club a Finalist for Texas Environmental Excellence Awards

By: Mary Ann Cozza

Going green never felt so good!

UHD's Environmental Club (EVC) was named a finalist for the Texas Environmental Excellence Awards by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) for their community projects during the past year. Winners will be announced at an awards banquet May 1 in Austin.

The group's application cited their numerous community efforts, including Japhet Creek restoration, Discovery Green beautification, Ed's Bayou Clean-Up, sustainability and EVC garden work days, and Environmental Education Summit, Friends of Woodland Park and Urban Harvest events.

Kimberlyn Garcia, EVC executive officer, said, "EVC is an eco-friendly organization, whose vision includes raising awareness regarding our surroundings, gaining understanding of various topics, evoking passion for our environment, acting as role models for the next generation, transcending obstacles, and exposing others to nature within our communities."

The Texas Environmental Excellence Awards celebrate the bold efforts of citizens, communities, business, and organizations to preserve and protect the Texas environment. By honoring these individuals and organizations, TCEQ hopes to encourage other citizens to initiate like-minded projects and reinforce a spirit of environmental stewardship.

Congratulations to the UHD Environmental Club on this recognition!
