UHD Welcomes DoVeanna Fulton as Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences

DoVeanna Fulton recently joined UHD as dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

"I am really impressed and excited about the students I have encountered," Fulton said. "They truly seem engaged and excited to be here at UHD." She also joked that the students have been very helpful when she's needed directions around campus.

She said that one of her priority goals during the first weeks and months of being at UHD is to become more familiar with faculty, staff, students and the overall culture of UHD.

"I'd like to get a better sense of what the trajectory is of the university and see where I can best contribute and support initiatives that grow the university and provide our students with the best possible education," Fulton said.

Fulton comes to UHD from the University of Alabama (UA), where, as an associate professor, she created the department of Gender and Race Studies and served as founding chair. She also served as director of Graduate Studies and director of African-American Studies. In these roles, she maintained an active research agenda that contributed to knowledge of African-American lives and culture focused on 19th and early 20th century experiences of African-American women.

She is the author of several books pertaining to oral slave narratives and African-American women. Fulton also is a member of numerous professional organizations including the Modern Language Association, the American Studies Association, the College Language Association, the Society for the Study of American Women Writers, the Collegium for African-American Research, the Association for the Study of African and African-American Life and History, the American Folklore Society and the Society for the Study of Multiethnic Literature of the United States.

Fulton received a doctoral degree in American studies with concentrations in African-American literature, women's studies and oral discourse analysis from the University of Minnesota, and a bachelor's degree in English from Wayne State University.
