She also served as director of Graduate Studies and director of African-American Studies. In these roles, she maintained an active research agenda that contributed to knowledge of African-American lives and culture focused on 19th and early 20th century experiences of African-American women.

"We are honored and delighted to welcome Dr. Fulton to our campus and look forward to her leadership in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences," said Brian Chapman, UHD senior vice president for Academic Affairs and provost. "Her extensive experience as a professor and researcher of African-American literature and women's studies will greatly benefit our students and further strengthen our diverse faculty."

Prior to joining UA, she was an associate professor of English at Arizona State University and an assistant professor of English at The University of Memphis, as well as an assistant professor of language and learning at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. A proponent of global education, she also served as a volunteer instructor in the College of Agriculture at Jimma University in Jimma, Ethiopia.

She is the author of several books pertaining to oral slave narratives and African-American women. "I am most eager to join UHD, as the university's commitment to student success, academic excellence and community engagement mirrors my own," said Dr. Fulton. "I look forward to contributing my education and professional expertise to an institution with a student body as diverse and multicultural as my own studies and research interests."

Dr. Fulton received a doctoral degree in American studies with concentrations in African-American literature, women's studies and oral discourse analysis from the University of Minnesota, and a bachelor's degree in English from Wayne State University.
