The deadline for scholarship applications is Feb. 3, 2012 and the award date is March 1, 2012.
The Hamill Foundation awarded UHD $25,000 for Veterans Services in early December. Of that amount, $20,000 will be used for the scholarships – 10 scholarships of $2,000 per calendar year and the remaining $5,000 will be used to provide career preparation workshops for veterans.
According to Michael Records, manager of Veterans Services, a scholarship committee will be created to review the applications. Only the first 40 applications are eligible for review and 10 will be selected.
“With this scholarship, UHD veterans will be able to focus on their academic career instead of worrying about their Veterans Affairs payments arriving on time,” Records said. “We need to provide all of the necessary tools and resources in helping them achieve their degree and with this scholarship we will definitely make a difference in their lives.”
To be eligible for this award, students must be enrolled in the Spring 2012 semester at UHD, must demonstrate financial need, have a grade point average of 3.0 or better and must have received an other than dishonorable discharge from the Armed Forces. G.I. Jobs Magazine recently recognized UHD as a “Military Friendly” school for the second year citing its willingness to embrace service members and veterans as students. UHD has more than 400 veterans attending classes.
