Men’s Soccer Club Team Can’t Be Beaten

By: Mary Ann Cozza

UHD's Kelvin Rodriquez controls the midfield.

The UHD men’s soccer club team clinched its fourth consecutive conference title with a win over Lone Star College-Tomball this weekend and now advances to the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association Regional tournament at UT-Dallas Oct. 28 through 30.

The Gators beat the Timberwolves 7 to1 Sunday, Oct. 23, in front of a capacity crowd at the Gators’ home field, Bayland Park. Gator goals were scored by Octavio Mena, Cesar Arellano, Jose Gutierrez, Roger Arteaga and Phillip Chikwe.

The entire UHD team contributed to the win on Sunday. Gators Manny Flores, Kelvin Rodriguez, Michael Diaz and Johnny Hernandez controlled the midfield while defenders Nathan Marin, Ruben Acosta, Jonathan Segovia and Sebastian Mireles played lock-down defense, leaving keeper Carlos Cruz relatively unchallenged. The Gator bench also played a pivotal role in the victory, which put an exclamation point on an extraordinary season.

UHD broke two Houston Club Sports Conference records with the win over Tomball: scoring seven goals in one HCSC tournament game and winning the HCSC conference title for four consecutive years. The team finished the season at 7-0 and with a 24-game HCSC conference winning streak that dates back to 2008.
