The Nicole LaRose Memorial Scrabble Tournament was held Thursday, Sept. 22, at UHD to raise funds for a scholarship endowment in honor of the late UHD English faculty member, Nicole LaRose.

Over 40 UHD faculty, staff, students and friends participated in the tournament, which raised over $3,000, well over the $1,000 goal. High scorers of the tournament were Chuck Kennedy, Edgar Fuentes, Cassie Hawks, Lisetta Lavy and Jillian Hill. LaRose's father, Phil LaRose of Florida, presented medals to the winners.

Michelle Moosally, associate professor of English, said, "[Nicole] was a dedicated scholar and teacher, as well as an avid competitor. Scrabble was one of her favorite games and she excelled at it.

"She mentored students at all levels and was strongly supportive of student research. Thus, the scholarship endowment will be dedicated to support student research in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences."

Donations are still being accepted and can be made out to UHD with a notation that it should go to the Nicole LaRose scholarship endowment.
