Santos said the fellowship offers a graduate-school-like opportunity to study higher education leadership, issues and problem solving. "(The program) has an extraordinary reputation. It's amazing how many doors being an ACE Fellow opens for you," he said. "People are very receptive. You are interacting with people at leadership levels from a variety of different institutions."

The fellows work on a campus that isn't their own, receiving guidance and assignments from presidents and other senior leaders. People named to the group include individuals from universities in other countries as well as U.S. private and public universities. Santos will be job shadowing the president and provost of the California State University-Monterey Bay, south of the San Francisco metropolitan area.
