Memo from the President: UN Spokesperson to Visit Campus Oct. 23

It is my pleasure to announce a very special opportunity for UHD. As part of the U.N. Day events hosted by the Houston chapter of the United Nations Association (UNA), the U.N. Secretary General's official spokesperson, Mr. Stephane Dujarric, will speak at UHD. This is Dujarric's only speaking engagement during his visit to Houston and he would like to interact with students on global issues.

For more information about the issues to be discussed, please visit the United Nations website.

I would like to invite UHD faculty and students to participate in this dialogue with Dujarric on global citizenship and world affairs on Oct. 23 from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. in the Wilhelmina Cullen Auditorium.

Dujarric previously served as spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan from 2005 to 2006 and then as deputy communications director for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon from 2006 to 2007. Prior to his current appointment, Dujarric was director of news and media for the United Nations Department of Public Information, and previously served as director of communications for the United Nations Development Program.

In the private sector, Dujarric worked for ABC News for nearly 10 years in various capacities in the network's New York, London and Paris news bureaus. He traveled extensively on assignment to cover major stories throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

UHD has a long relationship with the UNA through the Model U.N. Program and its global humanitarian initiatives, such as "Nothing but Nets," promoted by the University Honors Program and its affiliated honor societies. This initiative brings mosquito nets to third-world communities to stop the spread of malaria.

University Honors Program students are working to promote U.N. Day. In addition, we are examining ways that UHD can partner with the Houston chapter of the UNA on initiatives such as the U.N. Choir, the Global Classroom and U.N. awareness programs.

I hope that you will plan to join us on Oct. 23. Seating is limited. Please register online to attend this momentous event.
