Dust is flying as the UHD W.I. Dykes Library prepares for the much-anticipated art installation that is part of the library's continued renovation project. The finished work of art, to be installed during the week of Aug. 15, is a five-panel, multilayer glass piece that will form the wall between the library's Event Room and the Reading Room on the northwest part of the fourth floor.

The glass is etched in natural and seasonal themes and special LED lights will be installed around the work to bask the glass in changing colored light. The walls of the Reading Room will be repainted from green to yellow, a color chosen by the artist to complement the work.

The UHD Art Acquisition Committee, comprised of people from the university and UH System as well as local art professionals, chose prominent Texas artist Bert Samples in 2008 to create the unique glass piece for the library. In holding with UH System policy, 1 percent of new construction costs must be allocated for art acquisition.
